A young boy named Jody lives on a farm in the Florida backwoods. One day he is out hunting with his dad when a rattler bit his dad. His father shoots the rattler. When the couple comes across a doe and her fawn, he shoots the doe for his father. When they get home, his father battles for life. A few days later, when they are sure his father will not die, Jody brings up the matter of the lonely fawn. Jody is aloud to bring the fawn home. Jody and the fawn (Flag) become friends like close brothers. Flag follows him every where, even when he goes hunting for a very dangerous bear! When his father becomes sick, Jody must farm their land. Flag does not have any good manners, so he eats all the crops. Jody's father and mother decide it is time for flag to go. Jody is heartbroken because they killed Flag. In the end, everybody is happy.
